There is no doubt that Shane Mosley is not who he once was in the past. The question is: does he have anything in the tank?
Some might think this question is purely academic. After all, Mosley hasn’t won a fight since 2009 and is now on a 4 fight winless streak. However, one must example who he’s lost to during that timeframe. His losses were to Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Pacquiao and Mayweather are All Time Greats, and Alvarez has the potential to be one. Between his Mayweather and Pacquiao fights, he drew to Sergio Mora.
But before his winless streak, Mosley destroyed Antonio Margarito in 9 rounds. Prior to that, he knocked out Ricardo Mayorga in round 12. He also defeated Luis Collazo, Fernando Vargas (twice), and Jose Luis Cruz.
As for his losses, undoubtedly Mosley has not looked good recently but this should be counterbalanced with the fact that Mosley hadn’t previously been a stranger to losing. He lost a competitive match-up against Miguel Cotto, and also lost twice each to Winky Wright and Vernon Forrest.
The further question therefore is: can Mosley win right now against Pablo Cesar Cano?
Cano has already lost twice to two faded veterans in Paulie Malignaggi and Erik Morales, but he was also quite competitive in both match-ups. Against domestic Mexican competition, though, Cano’s done well for himself with wins against Fidel Monterrosa Munoz, Francisco Contreras, Pablo Lugo, Jorge Romero, and the previously undefeated Johan Perez.
What one should never forget about Cano is two things. First, Cano cuts very easily. This was a factor in the Morales fight which was stopped due to cuts, but he also got cut against Malignaggi too. Second, Cano has a 69% KO ratio — which always makes him a real threat.

Watch Now >>> Alexandervs Purdy Fight Live

Lee Purdy’s unexpected call-up for a world welterweight title fight against high-profile American Devon Alexander in Atlantic City on Saturday could result in him breaking new ground in the most recognisable division in boxing.
Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley all campaign at 147lbs, and victory on Saturday would propel 25-year-old Purdy on to the world stage.
Purdy, ranked No 4 in the International Boxing Federation ratings, was called up three weeks ago when Matchroom stablemate Kell Brook suffered a foot stress fracture. It meant his bout with Alexander was delayed for a third time.
“Call it fate if you like. It was totally out of the blue,” Purdy’s promoter Eddie Hearn has said. “Our fighter Kell Brook was the mandatory challenger to Devon Alexander, he gets injured and the fight is postponed for a third time. It was a flat feeling.
“Then, 24 hours after talking to Lee’s trainer, Tony Sims, about what we might do next for Lee, I get a call from the States offering a world title challenge for the Essex lad. I called Tony Sims, he called Purdy, and about a third of a second later he’s called back to accept the challenge.”
Twenty months ago, the Colchester fighter lost the British welterweight title on a majority points decision to Colin Lynes, and was in the rebuilding process, but opportunities can present themselves when least expected. Purdy has clawed his way back since then with four straight wins - for the English welterweight title, and latterly, the IBF international welterweight crown.
“He’s learning all the time, and this world title fight has come too early, really, but when you are offered a world title fight against the likes of a Devon Alexander, you’ve got to take the opportunity,” Hearn said.
“You know you can’t pull the wool over people’s eyes. Purdy will be a huge underdog in this fight against Alexander. Sometimes you can see no way a fight can be won, but Lee Purdy has the tools to do it. He’s not going to outbox Alexander, but he could KO him because he’s as strong as a bull and has dynamite in both hands.
“If he wasn’t as strong as he is, and a big puncher, you couldn’t give him a chance, but if he can make it a brawl and take Alexander out of his comfort zone, he has a chance.
“Alexander is talking about fights with the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Amir Khan, so it would be easy for him to become ‘flat’ in a fight like this. He has nothing to gain, and he is expected to win every round in there.”

Saturday May 18, Fights Live presents live fight coverage of Lamont Peterson vs. Lucas Matthysse, presented live by Showtime Boxing. Peterson vs. Matthysse airs this Saturday, May 18 live on Showtime with a fight time of 9:00 p.m. ET. Bloody Elbow will have live fight night coverage, including results and discussion.
Peterson and Matthysse may not quite bring the same degree of name value as some recent fights, but for the boxing enthusiasts out there, this one is a much watch. Both men are highly ranked in the talent-rich junior welterweight division. Ring magazine has them at #1 and #2, behind only champion Danny Garcia. That should be reason enough alone to care, but as an added bonus, Showtime is really pushing the idea that the winner here will meet Garcia to complete an unofficial 4 man tournament that began with Garcia vs. Zab Judah. Either Garcia vs. Peterson or Garcia vs. Matthysse would be an excellent fight - let's hope Showtime makes it happen later this year.
Looking at these two men and the way their styles pair up makes it hard to pick a winner. Peterson is building on the strong momentum he started in late 2011 when he defeated Amir Khan by decision. He's since had just one fight - a win last year over Kendall Holt. Matthysse's rise to the top has perhaps been a bit quieter, without a name like Khan on his resume, but he's been a very active fighter, going 4-0 in the time Peterson has fought just once. Matthysse comes in here off an impressive first round lights-out KO of Mike Dallas, Jr. in January.
In the end, this is a pick 'em between two of the division's absolute elite, setting up an even bigger battle. Put that all together, and you have an absolute must watch fight.
Opening the broadcast will be Devon Alexander vs. Lee Purdy. Purdy steps in on one month's notice as a replacement for Kell Brook, who went down to injury. That change should make this a relatively easy win for Alexander.
