Peterson and Matthysse may not quite bring the same
degree of name value as some recent fights, but for the boxing enthusiasts out
there, this one is a much watch. Both men are highly ranked in the talent-rich
junior welterweight division. Ring magazine has them at #1 and #2, behind only
champion Danny Garcia. That should be reason enough alone to care, but as an
added bonus, Showtime is really pushing the idea that the winner here will meet
Garcia to complete an unofficial 4 man tournament that began with Garcia vs.
Zab Judah. Either Garcia vs. Peterson or Garcia vs. Matthysse would be an
excellent fight - let's hope Showtime makes it happen later this year.
Looking at these two men and the way their styles pair up
makes it hard to pick a winner. Peterson is building on the strong momentum he
started in late 2011 when he defeated Amir Khan by decision. He's since had
just one fight - a win last year over Kendall Holt. Matthysse's rise to the top
has perhaps been a bit quieter, without a name like Khan on his resume, but
he's been a very active fighter, going 4-0 in the time Peterson has fought just
once. Matthysse comes in here off an impressive first round lights-out KO of
Mike Dallas, Jr. in January.
In the end, this is a pick 'em between two of the
division's absolute elite, setting up an even bigger battle. Put that all
together, and you have an absolute must watch fight.
Opening the broadcast will be Devon Alexander vs. Lee
Purdy. Purdy steps in on one month's notice as a replacement for Kell Brook,
who went down to injury. That change should make this a relatively easy win for
Alexander.
